Higher Order Nonhomogeneous Equations
Undetermined coefficients carries over unchanged: guess in the same shape as the forcing and match coefficients. The only new wrinkle is that a root can now repeat more than twice, so a guess that matches a root of multiplicity gets multiplied by .
What the symbols mean
- Particular solution
One solution of the forced equation, found by guessing its form.
Explanation
A nonhomogeneous equation is simply one with something outside pushing on the system: a right side that isn't zero. ("Homogeneous" means every term has in it; the extra has no , which is what makes it nonhomogeneous.) All we're really saying here is that for higher order equations you find the answer the same way you did in second order. The answer is just two pieces: (what the system does on its own) and (one response to the push, guessed in the push's shape). The only new thing is that your first guess can collide with more than twice, so you may need to multiply it by a few extra times. It sounds like a lot, but it's one old rule with a bigger number in it; bear with it.
Everything from undetermined coefficients in second order still applies: , comes from the characteristic polynomial, and is a guess shaped like the forcing. The guess table is the same too.
The duplication rule now depends on multiplicity. If the forcing's form matches a root of multiplicity , multiply the guess by . In second order you only ever needed or , because a root could repeat at most twice. Think about why the power has to be now. A root repeated times puts all into , and each of those gives when substituted. You have to climb past all of them, to , before the guess can produce anything nonzero.
A common mistake. In , it's tempting to think the guess is safe because has no in it. It isn't: is a root, so constants already solve the homogeneous equation, and the in the guess would just vanish. Multiply by : guess . A root at is easy to miss because doesn't look like an exponential.
