Hyperbolas
A hyperbola is two curved branches facing away from each other. Its equation is an ellipse's with a minus sign, and far from the center each branch straightens out along a pair of guide lines called asymptotes.
What the symbols mean
- Center's x
The center is (h, k), between the branches.
- Center's y
The center is (h, k).
- Vertex distance
The branches start a units left and right of the center.
- Box height
Together with a, sets the asymptotes' steepness.
What the symbols mean
- Asymptote slope
Rise over run of the guide lines the branches approach.
Explanation
A hyperbola is simply a pair of curves that open away from each other, like two bowls placed back to back. Its equation is the ellipse's with a minus sign in the middle, and that one sign changes everything. The pieces are the same as before: and (the center, sitting between the branches), (how far from the center each branch starts) and (which, together with , sets how steeply the branches spread). The asymptote formula is just two straight lines through the center with slope . Bear with it; it's a close cousin of the ellipse.
Why there's a gap in the middle. Take . The part is subtracted, so has to be at least , meaning . Nothing on the curve lives between and , which is why it splits into two branches starting at .
Why the asymptotes are there. Far out, and are both huge, so the on the right is tiny by comparison. The equation is then roughly , which means . So the branches get closer and closer to those two lines.
Which way it opens. The positive squared term wins. If the term is positive, the branches open left and right, with vertices . If the term is positive, as in , they open up and down, with vertices .
Sketching. Draw a box reaching across and up and down from the center, and extend its diagonals; those are the asymptotes. Then draw each branch from its vertex, bending toward them.
