Applications of Exponentials and Logarithms
Anything that changes by a fixed percentage per unit of time, like money, populations or a drug in the bloodstream, follows an exponential model. The exponential tells you how much; the logarithm tells you how long.
What the symbols mean
- Amount
What the account is worth after t years.
- Principal
The starting deposit.
- Annual rate
As a decimal: 6% is 0.06.
- Compounding periods
Times per year interest is added: 12 for monthly.
- Time
In years.
What the symbols mean
- Initial amount
The quantity at t = 0.
- Rate constant
Positive for growth, negative for decay.
Explanation
An exponential model is simply a formula for anything that grows or shrinks by the same percentage every hour, year or day. The compound interest formula looks crowded, but it's just (what you start with) times (the growth for one period: the yearly rate split into pieces), multiplied once per period, times. The growth and decay formula is the same idea with (the starting amount) and (how fast it changes, negative for decay). These are the formulas behind bank accounts, carbon dating and medicine doses. Nothing here is new; it's the last four lessons put to work.
Continuous compounding. is what approaches as you compound more and more often. It's the same limit that defined in the first lesson of this unit, just with a rate in it.
Doubling time and half-life. "How long until it doubles?" means solve for , and you get . Half-life is the same with . Notice the starting amount isn't in the answer: an exponential takes the same time to double whether you have $10 or $10 million, because each step multiplies by the same factor. That's also why a substance with half-life keeps a fraction after time : just counts how many half-lives have gone by.
Finding from data. If a quantity grows from to in time , then . Divide and take a log, and .
